What age do you have to be to serve alcohol in Iowa?

alcoholic drinks

Iowa law requires that you are at least 21 years old to operate a bar, restaurant, or club that sells alcohol. You could be facing big fines or jail time if your bar, restaurant, or club serves alcohol to anyone under the age of 21.

Iowa's minimum legal age to sell alcohol in the state is 21. However local governments could make it lower. This rule applies to all businesses that sell beer or wine and spirits, as well as those that are located in residential areas.

Iowa Alcoholic Beverages Division issues liquor licenses to anyone who makes, imports or retails alcoholic beverages. Licenses are available in three categories: retail, wholesale, and manufacture/import. ABD provides an online chart which explains the types and costs for each license.

Iowa Youth Labor Bill

In January, the Iowa House approved a bill that will allow people who are 16 and 17 years old to work in bars and restaurants. They will now be allowed to work between 9 and 11 p.m. from June 1 to Labor Day. This is in addition to the current requirement of 7:59 p.m.

Youth employees can also work in laundry and freezer facilities under the bill. This allows them to work longer hours while not violating current law. Some lawmakers feared that this would expose more youth to sexual assault and other problems.
